NCMB completes screening for 2011 Outstanding LMCs

Quezon City—Labor Undersecretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac announced today the completion of the screening process for the 2011 Search for Outstanding LMC Awards for Industrial Peace.

“We have the winners already,” Cacdac said in his report to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz after the National Board of Judges which he chairs finished the selection and screening process to pick the model LMCs. “But their identity will not be known until the LMC National Convention which will be held in Naga City on November 8-9, 2011,” he added.

The National Board of Judges convened at the Occupational Safety and Health Center,  Agham Road, Diliman, Quezon City on October 18 and 19, 2011 to select the outstanding LMCs from among twenty regional finalists.

The twenty finalists which made it during the regional screening include ATMEL-TSPIC Corporation, Dusit Thani-Manila, and FEU-NRMF (NCR); Benguet Electric Cooperative, Hedcor Inc.,  and The Manor at Camp John Hay (CAR); Holcim Philippines Inc. – La Union Plant (Region 1); Sanyo Semiconductors Manufacturing  Philippines Corporation and Yokohama Tire Philippines (Region 3); Ishida Philippines Grating Company Inc., Mary Mediatrix Medical Center, and Universal Robina Corporation (Region 4-A);  Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (Region 4-B); Energy Development Corporation (Region 5);  San Miguel Brewery Inc. – Bacolod (Region 6); San Miguel Brewery Inc. – Mandaue and Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa (Region 7); Davao Light and Power Company, Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation (Region 11); and Taganito Mining Corporation (Region 13).

These twenty finalist will have the chance to win one of six awards for Most Outstanding LMC and the P25,000 that goes with it. All twenty finalist will receive plaques and trophies.

The 2011 Search for Outstanding LMC Awards for Industrial Peace is the seventh to be conducted since it was institutionalized in 1999. It is undertaken through the collaboration of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB), an agency attached to the Department of Labor and Employment, and the Philippine League of Labor-Management Cooperation Practitioners (PHILAMCOP), the national association of LMC advocates and practitioners.

“We conduct the Search every two years to recognize best practices and success stories of companies with LMCs – LMC mechanisms that have proven effective in improving labor relations in the workplace, which resulted in increased productivity, worker’s job satisfaction, and good business performance,” Cacdac, who is also officer-in-charge of NCMB, further said.

An LMC is a plant-level mechanism that is designed to preserve industrial peace in companies and establishments by encouraging constant communication and positive interaction between workers and employees.

Baldoz lauded the joint efforts of the NCMB and PHILAMCOP in conducting the biennial event.

“Our advocacy for the adoption of LMC mechanisms in companies is in keeping with the constitutional policy to promote the rights of workers to participate in policy and decision-making on matters that affect their interests, which is one of the reforms being pursued in the 22-point labor and employment agenda of the President,” she said.

Twelve companies have won the award since 1999, including two Hall of Famers (four-time winners) and three others that won the award at least twice.
